Episode 3 was an absolute debacle. Like, more of a debacle than I wanted it to be.
We’ll list the issues first
- We didn’t turn the Air Conditioning on. It was the first hot week of the summer and we honestly didn’t think about it. The amount of people in our apartment rose the temperature like crazy too. We had about 50 sweaty humans hot-boxing the place.
- The audio sucked. Firstly there was some complicated feedback loop between the playback tracks and the recording tracks. The opening theme video took about 3 tries to get going. Secondly we didn’t mike the stage and no one could hear the interviews. I will not make this mistake again, we NEED an area desk mic and proper mains for the next episode.
- The secondary audience TV didn’t work. I’m not sure if the Ethernet cable took too much damage from people walking on it, or if the HDMI extenders are just too troublesome to count on. When people way in the back couldn’t see the show along with improper audio reinforcement, they began to talk. I don’t blame them and I take the fault for this. If they could see and hear, they would have been too engrossed in comedy to talk.
Now that’s off my chest – Lets talk about what went well!
- The comedy was there. Our skit concepts were great, I couldn’t be happier with them.
- The Tamale Guy showed up. He was hard to lock down! We attempted to get him for episode 2 but he never called us back. For this episode we had to work through his daughter (as his english isn’t fluent) and we threw him a hefty show-up fee. He was our highest paid talent, sorry Zac! He also sold out of tamales within 4 minutes and I was finding the corn husks all over the apartment for days to come. Success.
- The crew continues to impress me. Kimi Arquines is always a massive help to the show and we can’t thank her enough. We had a new edition to the camera squad as well, Robert Zukowski. Rob is a friend of mine from college and did a fantastic job picking up shots when we needed them. His enthusiasm really pumped me up too.
- People were happy to be there. We host an honest and welcoming show. Everyone is a welcomed house-guest at Heat Check and regardless of how the show goes it’s still a fun party.
